Last year and now into 2010, clients have asked me for help to coach individuals in communication behaviors that create the perception of ‘gravitas’. Whilst there has always been a demand for such help from people as they develop into leadership roles, what has been noticeable over the last twelve months has been the growth in the demand for ‘gravitas’. What is gravitas and why is in demand right now?
Some of this has been driven by the specific need to rescue client relationships, or find a new job, but there is also a perception that ‘gravitas’ is a better demeanor for leaders in the current economic environment.
Gravitas is strictly defined as ‘substance or depth of personality’ and a ‘serious or dignified persona’.
You can’t fake gravitas, but you can certainly start to behave your way toward it.
